Tree Ring Studies
Dr. Charles Ruffner, SIUC Forestry Department, (bottom photo) selects and photographs a log segment from the old Wayside Store for dendrochronology studies, in order to establish that the cabin dates to the time of the Trail of Tears.
Dendrochronology, or tree ring dating, is the method of dating based on the analysis of tree ring growth. Preliminary results have determined the oak log was harvested in the 1830 - 1840’s.
