Like many baby boomers of his era, SIU alumnus Richard Jurek remembers laying on the green shag rug carpeting of his parents living room floor to watch Neil Armstrong take his first steps onto the lunar surface.
Jurek, a marketing and public relations expert, has become one of the country's foremost collectors of memorabilia connected to the American space program and has recently co-authored with David Meerman Scott, Marketing the Moon: The Selling of the Apollo Lunar Program. It's a fascinating story of how public relations professionals helped grow public support for the space program during the turbulent decade of the 1960s.
Jurek discusses the book with WSIU-TV producer Jak Tichenor and displays several items from his collection, including a moon-dust-smeared command module checklist from the Apollo 17 mission once owned by Illinois native Gene Cernan, the last person to walk on the moon.
