WSIU InFocus Segment Archives
Meet Mary Emma Thompson of Westfield, Illinois who has spent her retirement years chronicling Depression-era art for Illinois Post Offices. This artwork is different from other work funded by the New Deal Stimulus because it was commissioned by the U.S. Treasury Department. Thompson traveled to southern Illinois to help WSIU InFocus find treasures in local Post Offices and to gain insights about their history. Joining us on the tour is SIU emeritus professor George Mavigliano who published a book about this unique artwork in 1989 entitled The Federal Art Project in Illinois: 1935-1943. But perhaps nobody knows more about Depression-era art in Illinois Post Offices than Thompson, who has published books and guides on the topic, but has yet to write a book about her own fascinating quest to find and understand these pieces.
