Carbondale, Ill. -- Reporters, photographers, and video crews are invited to cover a family-oriented summer reading celebration featuring the installation of a WSIU/PBS KIDS Raising Readers Library Corner on Tuesday, July 20 from 1-3pm at Carbondale Public Library, 405 W. Main in Carbondale.
The free event is being held in conjunction with the library's Summer Reading Program, “Scare Up a Good Book.” It is the 5th PBS KIDS Raising Readers Library Corner installed by WSIU this summer. Other library locations WSIU has visited include Herrin, DuQuoin, Marion, and Eldorado.
Kids will enjoy special appearances by PBS KIDS characters SuperWHY! and Leona the Lion, vocabulary games, reading together, creating books, giveaways, and hands-on learning at the online destinations of PBS KIDS Island (ages 3-6) and The Great Word Quest (ages 6-8).
Lia Mira of Today's Hit Music CIL-FM will present a live radio remote, so kids will have an opportunity to share the fun on the air.
WSIU is one of 20 PBS stations expanding the PBS KIDS Library Corners program in libraries across the country this summer. The Library Corners are designed to give children ages two through eight the opportunity to strengthen their literacy skills through free, fun activities at their local public or school library. They are provided through PBS KIDS Raising Readers, a federally-funded national initiative that uses the power of media to help improve the reading skills of young children, with an emphasis on children from low-income families. WSIU is a Raising Readers station.
