Carbondale, Ill. – WSIU Public Television, a public media arm of Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), is launching a PBS KIDS Raising Readers Library Corner on Tuesday, July 20 from 1-3pm at Carbondale Public Library, 405 W. Main in Carbondale.
The free event is being held in conjunction with the library's ongoing Summer Reading Program, “Scare Up a Good Book.” It is the 5th PBS KIDS Library Corner installed by WSIU this summer. Library Corners have already been installed Herrin, DuQuoin, Marion, and Eldorado.
The general public is invited to attend.
Kids will enjoy special appearances by PBS KIDS character SuperWHY!, vocabulary games, reading together, creating books, and hands-on learning at the online destinations of PBS KIDS Island (ages 3-6) and The Great Word Quest (ages 6-8) at pbskids.org/read. Both sites are designed to help kids master literacy skills at eight different levels in a fun, interactive way, while parents can get progress reports on how well their children are doing.
Lia Mira of Today's Hit Music CIL-FM will present a live radio remote, so kids will have an opportunity to share the fun on the air.
WSIU is one of 20 PBS stations expanding the PBS KIDS Library Corners program in libraries across the country this summer. The Library Corners are designed to give children ages two through eight the opportunity to strengthen their literacy skills through free, fun activities at their local public or school library. They are provided through PBS KIDS Raising Readers, a federally-funded national initiative that uses the power of media to help improve the reading skills of young children, with an emphasis on children from low-income families. WSIU is a Raising Readers station.
WSIU Public Broadcasting is licensed to the Board of Trustees of Southern Illinois University and is an integral part of the College of Mass Communication & Media Arts on the Carbondale campus. The WSIU stations reach more than three million people across five states and beyond through three digital public television channels, three public radio stations, a radio information service, a website, and an education and community outreach department. WSIU's mission is to improve the quality of life of the people they serve. The WSIU stations partner with other community organizations to promote positive change and to support the academic and public service missions of Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
