Carbondale Ill. -- Beginning on Monday, September 6, 2010, WSIU TV 8 and WUSI TV 16, the public television stations of Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), will welcome The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That!, a brand new children's TV program from PBS KIDS based on the popular Dr. Seuss book series. The WSIU stations also are launching a new PBS KIDS fall children's programming schedule.

Voiced by award-winning actor Martin Short, The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That!, airing weekdays at 7:30am and Saturday and Sunday at 6:30am, was created in response to recent findings that children graduating from kindergarten are less prepared to learn about science than other subjects. In each episode, the Cat in the Hat and his pals the Fish, Thing 1, and Thing 2 guide human characters Sally and Nick on adventures where they make natural-science discoveries, from how bees make honey to why owls sleep during the day. The kids learn by observing, collecting and managing clues, making connections, constructing and evaluating theories, and having discussions - all in a preschool-appropriate manner.

WSIU's outreach department will incorporate educational activities and resources, including a traveling Reader's Theatre with The Cat in the Hat costume character and child participants, at area child care centers, libraries, and schools. For more details about WSIU's outreach plans for The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That!, contact Beth Spezia at (618) 453-5595 or beth.spezia@wsiu.org.
