Carbondale, Ill. - Reporters, photographers, and camera crews are invited to cover WSIU's Biz Kid$ Bash on Saturday, August 1 from 11am to 3pm in the Center Court area of the Illinois Centre Mall, 3000 West DeYoung Street in Marion, Illinois.
MEDIA: The best time to arrive is between 2:00 and 3:00pm, during the team presentations and awards ceremony.
Sponsored by WSIU, the SIU Credit Union, and the Illinois Centre Mall, this free public event based on the PBS television series Biz Kid$ is designed to teach money management skills and social responsibility to children in grades four through nine.
Participants will enjoy video clips from the PBS television series Biz Kid$, then form teams to create a business, formulate a business plan, develop price lists, create a company logo, design business cards, and more. Volunteers from the SIU Credit Union and Kemper CPA, WSIU Public Broadcasting, and Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) will coach teams through each step of the business-planning process.
Each group will present their plan to a team of judges, with the winning team receiving gift certificates donated by the SIU Credit Union, SIU logo items donated by 710 Bookstore/Saluki Connections, and other prizes. All participants will receive a certificate of achievement and a bag of goodies to take home.
Jim Halpin's Great American Chop House will provide lunch for kids' teams and volunteers.
SIUC graduate student Katrina Stackhouse will serve as emcee for the event. Judges are Dennis Schaefer, president of the SIU Credit Union; Adam Jackson, general manager of Jim Halpin's Great American Chop House in Marion, Illinois and Scott McClatchey, financial advisor for the Alliance Investment Planning Group and president of the Friends of WSIU advisory board.
The Biz Kids$ television series airs on WSIU TV on Thursdays and Fridays at 2:30pm and is sponsored locally by the SIU Credit Union. Visit wsiu.org/bizkids to learn more.
