Carbondale, Ill. – WSIU Public Broadcasting, the public media arm of Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), along with Stinson Memorial Library in Anna, and Union County and Sunrise Preschools, invite families to join them for a special celebration of Día de los Niños, or "Children's Day," on Wednesday, April 14 beginning at 10am. The event will be held at Stinson Memorial Library, 409 South Main in downtown Anna.
Día de los Niños is an annual celebration of children, families, and reading that emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. It is held in conjunction with Week of the Young Child, which is April 11-17 this year. The theme for the Week of the Young Child 2010 is Early Years are Learning Years®. Week of the Young Child is organized by the National Association for the Education of Young Children as an opportunity for early childhood programs, related organizations, communities, and states to focus on the needs of young children and their families.
WSIU's colorful Raising Readers Literacy Van, made possible by John A. Logan Childcare Resource & Referral, will be at this year's Día de los Niños event at Stinson Memorial Library in Anna. Kids will be invited to watch PBS KIDS videos, make tambourines, sing, and march in an outdoor parade. Children also will greet PBS KIDS character SuperWHY and enjoy ice cream from the Sweetreats truck. Each child will receive educational materials and a new book from the PBS KIDS series Maya & Miguel.
WSIU is a participating station in PBS KIDS Raising Readers, a multi-year, grant-funded initiative. Raising Readers uses research-based, innovative television programs and related multimedia content to help children ages 2-8 from low-income families to strengthen their reading and literacy skills.
Questions about WSIU's Día de los Niños celebration should be directed to Beth Spezia at (618) 453-5595 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
