FM Host Leads Soundwalk of SIUC Campus

Media Advisory
For Sunday, July 18, 2010

Contact: Dave Armstrong, host of Sounds Like Radio, malty1@gmail.com

Carbondale, Ill. -- Media are welcome to cover a unique community event on the SIU Carbondale campus on Sunday, July 18 from 10:30-11:30am, as Dave Armstrong, host of the experimental music program Sounds Like Radio on WSIU Radio, will lead a “soundwalk” of the University campus. Armstrong also hosts the experimental sound art and noise music program It's Too Damn Early on WDBX-FM Carbondale.

Participants should meet Armstrong outdoors at the north entrance of the Student Center, 1255 Lincoln Drive in Carbondale to start the soundwalk.

During a soundwalk, participants are asked to pay close attention to the environmental sounds they hear as a way to develop a sound print or audio guide of a specific geographic area.

The Sounds Like Radio Soundwalk coincides with World Listening Day, a special day set aside by the World Listening Project designed to celebrate the practice of listening as it relates to the world around us, environmental awareness, and acoustic ecology. World Listening Day is also meant to raise awareness about the World Soundscape and Listening Projects, the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, and group efforts to explore phonography, as well as to design and implement educational initiatives that explore these concepts and practices.

Sounds Like Radio is a two-hour program for active listeners that brings a unique perspective to the sounds around us every day. The program features experimental music, avant-garde works, sound art, and field recordings. It airs Sundays from 3-5am on WSIU Public Radio,
