Herrin Public Library, WSIU to Host Cat in the Hat Readers' Theater Performance
Families and Friends Invited to PBS KIDS Corner at Herrin City Library

Herrin, Ill. – The general public is invited to join WSIU Public Broadcasting, the public media service of Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), for a celebration of the joy of reading at a Cat in the Hat Readers Theater Performance on Wednesday, November 17 beginning at 5:30pm at Herrin City Library, 120 North 13th Street in Herrin, Illinois.

The event will be held as a part of Family Reading Night, a statewide event sponsored by Jesse White, Secretary of State and State Librarian. Celebrated annually in Illinois during the third week of November, Family Reading Night encourages families to spend quality time reading together. This year's theme is "Fall into Reading.”

Headlining the evening's activities is a Raising Readers Theater performance featuring The Cat in theHatfrom the beloved Dr. Seuss children's book of the same name. The performance is provided courtesy of John A. Logan College Child Care Resource & Referral. Using props created by WSIU, the Cat in the Hat and children at the library will act out the story. Children will help read the story during the readers theater. Following the performance, WSIU will provide certificates and eBooks to actors. New reading materials will be available for everyone who attends.

Families also will enjoy the library's PBS KIDS Library Corner, which features PBS KIDS banners, a PBS KIDS rug, and dedicated shelving units, as well as PBS KIDS program-related books, activity guides, and DVDs, and hands-on learning opportunities at the online sites PBS KIDS Island and The Great World Quest.

WSIU-TV 8/WUSI-TV 16 recently added the PBS KIDS television series The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That! to its programming schedule on weekdays at 7:30am and weekends at 6:30am. Voiced by award-winning actor Martin Short, the Cat guides friends Sally and Nick – with a little help from the Fish, Thing 1, and Thing 2 – on fun adventures where they make natural-science discoveries, from how bees make honey to why owls sleep during the day.

Herrin City Library was the site of children's media research during 2009 and has played a significant role in helping to develop new public media for libraries at the national level. It was the first library in the state to implement a PBS KIDS Library Corner in partnership with WSIU-TV and PBS KIDS Raising Readers. Using PBS KIDS media resources, Library Corners help to strengthen the literacy skills of children ages two through eight through free, fun activities at their local public or school library. WSIU and the national Raising Readers team are grateful to the staff of Herrin City Library for their work in helping to develop outstanding public media services and activities for children.

About PBS KIDS Library Corners
PBS KIDS Library Corners are provided through PBS KIDS Raising Readers, a national initiative that uses the power of public media to help improve the reading skills of young children, with an emphasis on children from low-income families. The effort is funded by a Ready To Learn grant from the U.S. Department of Education, part of a cooperative agreement with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), PBS, and The Ready To Learn Partnership. WSIU is a Raising Readers station.
