Carbondale, Ill. -- Reporters, photographers, and camera crews are invited to cover a film preview screening and discussion of the upcoming PBS series God in America on Monday, October 11 at 6pm in the Fellowship Hall of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 303 South Poplar in Carbondale.
WSIU Public Broadcasting, the public media arm of Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), and the Carbondale Interfaith Council are hosting the event. The preview screening should last approximately 40 minutes, followed by discussion of the issues raised in the program. Refreshments will be served. The evening will conclude at approximately 7:30pm.
God in America, a presentation of American Experience and Frontline, is a six-part TV series that examines the potent and complex interaction between religion and democracy, the origins of the America concept of religious liberty, and the controversial evolution of that idea in the nation's courts and political arena. The series will air on WSIU-TV 8/WUSI-TV 16 on Monday, October 11 through Wednesday, October 13 from 8-10pm.
WSIU will launch a corresponding website at www.wsiu.org during the week of Monday, October 11. The site will include updates on local activities associated with the series, as well as links to the national program website and Faithbook, an online site for religious discourse at www.pbs.org/godinamerica/faithbook.
WSIU and the Carbondale Interfaith Council also are hoping to schedule a series of tours of sacred spaces in Carbondale and possibly other locations. Details have not been finalized.
