Carbondale, Ill. -- How has religious belief shaped the social, political, and cultural life of the world's most religiously diverse nation?
WSIU Public Broadcasting, the public media arm of Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), and the Carbondale Interfaith Council invite the University community and general public to explore answers to this question by attending a preview screening of the upcoming PBS film God in America on Monday, October 11 at 6pm in the fellowship hall of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 303 South Poplar in Carbondale. Discussion will follow the approximately 40-minute screening. Refreshments will be provided.
God in America, a presentation of American Experience and Frontline, is a six-part TV series that will examine the potent and complex interaction between religion and democracy, the origins of the America concept of religious liberty, and the controversial evolution of that idea in the nation's courts and political arena. The series will air on WSIU-TV 8/WUSI-TV 16 on Monday, October 11 through Wednesday, October 13 from 8-10pm.
WSIU will launch a corresponding website at www.wsiu.org by Monday, October 11, which will include updates on local activities associated with the series, as well as links to the national program website and Faithbook, an online site for religious discourse at www.pbs.org/godinamerica/faithbook.
WSIU and the Carbondale Interfaith Council also are hoping to schedule a series of tours of sacred spaces in Carbondale and possibly other locations. Details have not been finalized.
