Sarah Potts Asbell in Pope County, IL

Sarah Potts Asbell - Great-great grandmother of Joseph Garvon Crabb, and born in Pope County, Illinois in 1838. Parents were Wheeler Potts and Elizabeth Tombs. Sarah married Mariel Mauld Asbell.

Family tradition relates that Sarah (on the left) was taken from the Cherokee as they passed through Pope County in December 1838 because her mother died in childbirth. Some family stories say the Potts family stole her from the Cherokees.

The woman on right is unknown. Sarah and Mariel are buried in the Asbell-Crabb-Hicks Cemetery in northeastern Pope County.
